Being a symbol of Chinese culture and wisdom, Shang Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings contain lots of references to oriental folklore. From tales of soul-devouring demons to eternal guardian spirits, the film covers a vast gamut. The film starts on a lighter note with basic character introductions and moves on to lay the foundation for things to come soon. Once Shang-Chi (Sean) and Katy are introduced, the plot rapidly unfolds about who they really are and their backstory. From there we see new characters being introduced, who help take the story forward. Interestingly, despite being an action film, Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings starts off slow and picks up pace. However, the action slows down towards the interval, but picks up pace in the second half. A plethora of comic elements were sprinkled through the film, with many Easter eggs and surprises for true Marvel fans as the film keeps the audience in their seats. The second half of the film however is a well executed and produced action sequence with almost everyone participating in the first half. In fact, fans of Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will delight Marvel fans as the action unfolds with effortless CGI, well-coordinated action and stunts, and of course a thumping one with the trademark Marvel background music. Creates Crescendo. The last.

Simu Liu, Tony Leung, Destin Daniel Cretton on Avengers | Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Despite this, for those who have been following the Marvel series since day one, Shang Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings is missing a crucial ‘X’ factor, a sort of panache that favored the likes of Iron Man, Thor, The Avengers and Hulk stand out. But despite this, and despite the fact that the story is predictable, the film manages to entertain and revive the nostalgic feeling of watching a Marvel movie in theaters.

Performance-wise, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi does a good job of essaying the role of a child trained as a master assassin. Liu manages to execute his action sequences with aplomb along with emotion. Nora Lum is known professionally as Katy as Awkwafina, Menger Zhang as Xialing, and Tony Chiu-Wai Leung as Xu Wenwu do equally well in their given roles. There is a special mention here for Tony Chiu, as he cleverly balances the character of a father longing for his children, a husband for his wife, and a warlord for his power. Michelle Yeoh, and Ben Kingsley have been used critically, with one only as a welcoming party and the other as a comic interlude.

As far as the background score is concerned, Marvel has proven time and again that they are the masters of the game when it comes to using sound to the climax. Be it in his previous releases, the background score has always played a major role in propelling the events onscreen. In Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, it is the same, this time with heavy oriental instruments in the music. It makes for an engrossing watch with flawless CGI, and seamless transitions.

Overall, Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings Marvel manages to revive the action hero saga well. Despite a predictable storyline, the film is certainly a visual spectacle to experience on the big screen.
