Fast & Furious 9: The Fast Saga (English) Review {3.0/5} and Review Rating

Fast and Furious 9 is the story of Dominic Toretto and his gang who face threats from none other than Dom’s estranged brother. The film begins in 1989. Dominic Toretto’s (Winnie Bennett) father, Jack Toretto (JD Pardo), is a racer who is killed in an accident while racing. Dominic is soon arrested when he attacks a rival racer who was involved in an accident that killed Jack. In prison, Dominic learns that it was his brother Jacob (Finn Cole) who did some mischief in Jack’s car and is responsible for his demise. After being released from prison, Dominic challenges Jacob to a race. The deal is that Jacob must leave town if he is defeated. Dominic defeats Jacob and the latter runs away. In the present day, Dominic (Vin Diesel), Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) and their son Brian lead a peaceful life in a remote area. However, Dominic and Letty everyday recount the adventures of their earlier lives. One day, members of his gang – Roman Pearce (Tyrese Gibson), Tej Parker (Chris “Ludacris” Bridges) and Ramsey (Nathalie Emmanuel) – visit him. They inform Dominic and Letty that the plane carrying Cipher (Charlize Theron) was attacked by some evil elements, causing it to crash in Montequinto, Central America. Dominic and Letty accompany him in finding the crash site. In the crashed airplane, they find a part of a device called Ares but they don’t know what it is. At this point, they are attacked by a private army led by none other than Jacob (John Cena). Jacob steals the trick from them and runs away. Dominic and his gang then learn that what Jacob stole was half of Ares. Once they have obtained both parts of Ares and are able to unlock it, they will be able to hack any computer-controlled weapon system. The other half of Ares is in Edinburgh where Jacob is also leading. Dominic and his gang follow suit. Meanwhile, he also learns that his dead gang member Han Liu (Sung Kang) is also somehow connected to Ares. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Movie Review Fast And Furious 9 The Fast Saga English 1

The story of Justin Lin, Alfredo Botello and Danielle Casey is the norm for this franchise. Daniel Casey and Justin Lin’s screenplay is gripping but has many loose ends. There is a lot of drama in the first half but the action is very less and even the drama is not that exciting. Furthermore, its as expected; One can easily guess from a mile that Jacob will double cross at some point and join Dominic. In some places the dialogues are simple and funny

Justin Lin’s direction is great but I wish he had a tighter script. Talking about the plus points, he handles scale, action and grandeur very well. Some of the dramatic scenes are handled cleverly. On the other hand, the film has a long run time (2.23 hours). There is hardly any action in the first half and it will test your patience after a while. Thankfully, there are a lot of action scenes in the second half and it makes up for the shortcomings to some extent.

Fast & Furious 9 starts on a sad note, showing how Jack Toretto died. But soon the action turns into a chase sequence from Central America. It’s a great scene and the very exciting car jump scene involving Dominic and Letty comes within the first 20 minutes. This is where the film falls and rises during the Edinburgh sequence itself. The final action scene is thrilling. However, a bit more tension was expected in the space sequence.

Vin Diesel is, as expected, at his best. He is the face of the franchise and he contributes to the bulk of the film. John is an important part of Cena and he is fair. Michelle Rodriguez is restrained in dramatic scenes but has a lot of fun while performing stunts. Tyrese Gibson and Chris “Ludacris” Bridges contribute humor to the film. Nathalie Emmanuel creates a surprise in the second half in the Edinburgh chase sequence. Charlize Theron and Jordana Brewster (Mia Toretto) find limited scope. Sung Kang is hardly there. Also why he didn’t die and stay underground for so many years is not very convincing. Helen Mirren (Magdalene “Queen” Shaw) is devastated. Anna Sawai (Elle) doesn’t have much to do after her whistle-worthy action scene. But she could make for a great addition in future installments of the series. Lucas Black (Sean Boswell) is strictly fine. Vinnie Bennett is great as young Dominic. He also sounds a bit like Vin Diesel. Finn Cole is fine. Jason Statham (Derek Shaw) appears in the mid-credits scene.

Movie Review Fast And Furious 9 The Fast Saga English 2

Brian Tyler’s music is dramatic and adds to the effect. Stephen F Windon’s cinematography is superb. The lensman tries his best to be creative while taking the shot and it gives a nice touch. The action and VFX are superb. It is believed in land mine sequences and scenes where electromagnetic waves create madness. The editing of Dylan Highsmith, Kelly Matsumoto and Greg D’Auria should have been crisp in the first half.

Overall, FAST AND FURIOUS 9 is a decent, time pass entertainer that will be loved by the audience and fans of the series. However, the lengthy length, comparatively unpredictable first half and prolonged lockdown for theaters in Maharashtra will affect the box office collections in the long run.
