The Saif Ali Khan Rani Mukerji film BUNTY AUR BABLI 2 is a poor show all the way

Bunty Aur Babli 2 Review {1.5/5} and Review Rating

Bunty Aur Babli 2 is the story of two pairs of thugs. After 15 years of the first film, Rakesh (Saif Ali Khan) and Vimmi (Rani Mukerji) are now settled in Fursatganj. They have a son, Pappu, and have given up the thief job altogether. One day, Inspector Jatayu Singh (Pankaj Tripathi) arrests him for betraying a group of middle-aged men. They were promised a visit to a country called the Virgin Islands and each person in the group paid Rs. 5 lakh to a couple – Kunal Singh (Siddhant Chaturvedi) and Sonia Rawat (Sharvari). When these people reached the airport, they felt that they had been cheated. These angry men barge into Kunal and Sonia’s office to find Bunty and Babli’s logo. Jatayu was a junior cop in Dashrath Singh’s (Amitabh Bachchan) team who was in charge of solving the Bunty and Babli case. Hence, he knew about their whereabouts and apprehended them. Rakesh and Vimmi insist that they are innocent. But Jatayu refused to listen to him. He realizes his mistake when Kunal and Sonia act as another thief while Rakesh and Vimmi are in custody. This time they fool the mayor (Yashpal Sharma) of a town in western Uttar Pradesh on the pretext of selling a lease on the river Ganga. Jatayu makes an offer to Rakesh and Vimmi. He asks for their help in catching the new Bunty and Babli. Rakesh and Vimmi agree as they are hurt that someone is using their brand which they have built so hard. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Bunty Aur Babli 2

Aditya Chopra’s story is fine and gives a strong déj vu of his previous productions like Dhoom, Ladies Vs Ricky Behl, Badmaash Company etc.

Varun V Sharma’s script is good in the first half. The con games played by Kunal and Sonia before the intermission are interesting to watch at least. But in the second half, the film goes downhill as both humor and logic go out the window. It seemed that the author lacked ideas and did not know what to do next. Varun V Sharma’s dialogues add to the laughter at select places but could have been better.

Varun V Sharma’s direction is neat and devoid of complications. But it fails to hide the glaring flaws and not so funny developments of the second half. The biggest problem though is how easily things get done. For example, it is baffling how Rakesh and Vimmi manage to find Bunty and Babli in Goa. In the first half too, Vimmi gets to know about Sonia’s whereabouts in the gym. One could argue that his son, who is tech savvy, would have helped him. But how he did this was never told. And if it has the resources to track down such most wanted criminals, ideally the police should have better ways of doing the same. and that’s not all. The character of the kid is very funny but the way Rakesh and Vimmi used to leave him for days without anyone else’s help is very unconnected. And the script has a series of such errors.

Bunty Aur Babli 2 started well. The three con jobs featured in the first half keep the audience hooked. Jatayu’s entry is heroic and fun. After the interval, fireworks are expected as Rakesh and Vimmi travel to Abu Dhabi to nab the thief pair. But from here the plot points fail to entice. The ending is intended to be wicked but also silly and predictable.

Rani Mukerji: “I have challenged all stereotypes because neither have I…” Bunty Aur Babli 2

Talking about the performance, Saif Ali Khan is not in great form. And this is quite shocking as he is known to be an ace in all sorts of genres. Rani Mukerji is very loud and over the top and does not sync up with her character in the first half. The only scene where she does well is when she blasts Kunal and Sonia in the breakfast area and it is memorable because of her acting. Siddhant Chaturvedi makes a mark and proves that he is a hero material. Sharvari makes a confident start and looks sizzling. However, the performance of both suffers, as their back stories are not emphasized enough. Pankaj Tripathi is, as expected, relatable and hilarious. Yashpal Sharma is decent while the late Mohit Baghel (Golu Choubey) makes a mark in the scene where he apologizes to Sonia. Gopal Dutt (Nand Kishore) is lovely. Rajeev Gupta (Gupta; Sepoy) is passable. Neeraj Sood (Chadha), Asrani (Thare Singh), Brijendra Kala (Mehmood) and Prem Chopra get no room. Agrim Mittal (Pappu Trivedi) and Mahi Soni (Rinku Awasthi) are lovely but the character of the former could have been presented in a better way.

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s music is poor and this is another major problem with the film, as the soundtrack of Part 1 is still memorable. The title song is nothing special. ‘tattoo’ Wally’ The ending is played out in the credits and is forgettable. the same goes for ‘Love Zoo’ And ‘Dhiko chick’, Julius Packiam’s background score is much better.

Gavemic Yu Arya’s cinematography combines elegance and visual appeal. The production design of Rajat Poddat is good. Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s costume for Rani Mukerji is catchy and doesn’t contribute to the humour. Sometimes it even seems a bit cheap. For the rest, Lipakshi Elavadi’s costume is fine. Parvez Sheikh’s action is fine. Arif Sheikh’s editing could have been sleeker in the second half.

Overall, Bunty Aur Babli 2 is a bad show in every way. Due to negative word of mouth, there will be an impact on the overall collection at the box office. Disappointing!
